A dream qualifying final clash pits two Victorian heavyweights of recent years against one another at a packed MCG. The last meeting between Collingwood and Hawthorn in a final produced one of the all-time classics, with the Magpies winning by three points to advance to the 2011 premiership decider, thanks to a late Luke Ball goal. The Hawks will be favourites this time, having finished on top and beaten Collingwood twice this season, but there is enough class wearing black and white to ensure another tough tussle.

THE FOUR POINTS
HAWTHORN

1. Kyle Cheney and Xavier Ellis shape as the two most likely replacements for Brent Guerra, who tore his hamstring against West Coast. Cheney is the most like-for-like option. The former Demon is strong, hard at the contest, uses the ball well and filled in during Guerra's suspension between rounds 15 and 17. Ellis would offer big-game experience, having played a key role in the 2008 Grand Final win. He was dropped from last week's team, but had shown sound form in the three matches before that, which had been his first in an injury-interrupted year.

2. Lance Franklin didn't play when the Hawks beat Collingwood in round 17, but his formline against the Magpies is superb. In his seven games against Collingwood since the start of 2008, the three-time All Australian has averaged 18.5 disposals and 4.9 goals, and polled nine Brownlow Medal votes. Veteran Magpie Chris Tarrant is likely to get the big job of trying to keep the superstar quiet.

3. Seldom has there been a bigger roar for a substitute than when Cyril Rioli was introduced to last week's game. The small forward, coming back from a shoulder injury, managed 11 disposals, two tackles and a goal in just over a quarter of football, showing enough to suggest he'll start this week's match. Rioli has performed well in both games against Collingwood this season, taking a mark of the year contender during a game-changing second quarter blitz in round one, and collecting 19 disposals and laying eight tackles in round 17.

4. Ryan Schoenmakers should get the big job on Collingwood key forward Travis Cloke, but as always, the success of Hawthorn's defence will hinge on its ability to work together. Josh Gibson specialises in courageously jumping into packs as a third man up, and he should be rewarded with All Australian selection for his efforts this season. Gibson's task to perform that role against Cloke would seem easier if the Magpies don't bring Chris Dawes back in.

COLLINGWOOD
1. There will be at least one change for Collingwood, with the Pies confident Jarryd Blair will be recalled after missing Saturday night's win over Essendon with groin soreness. Tyson Goldsack is in some doubt after being subbed off with ankle pain in the third quarter, and the six-day break won't help him. Captain Nick Maxwell pulled up sore but is expected to be available while Andrew Krakouer is reportedly in good shape after his first game back after his February knee reconstruction.

2. The Pies will also have to weigh up whether they recall Dawes. The forward/back-up ruckman was omitted last Thursday after struggling with his form, and without a VFL game to gain match practice in, only has training this week to prove himself. Against the Bombers, they rucked Darren Jolly with Nick Maxwell in support - and occasionally Scott Pendlebury went third man up - but they'll have to consider that combination against Hawthorn duo David Hale and Jarryd Roughead.

3. After the win over the Bombers, coach Nathan Buckley said the Pies still weren't playing "flush", with their ball use questionable. But, they did take a big step in two other key areas with the players' hunt around the contest and defence better, as well as their "willingness to press up in the front half". Still, the Pies were scrappy against the Bombers and they won't be let off as easily against the Hawks - the team Buckley heralded as the best in the competition - if they continue to miss targets.

4. A big win for the Pies on Saturday night came in the form of Cloke. The big forward, who has struggled with his consistency this year, kicked five goals, four behinds, and took an equal career-best 16 marks. He seemed to benefit from the forward line shake up that saw Jackson Paine join him as a focal point, Krakouer at his feet and Chris Tarrant up the other end of the ground. But most importantly, Cloke would have gained massive confidence from the fact he was finally able to clunk some marks and kick some goals, even if his waywardness on set shots occasionally plagued him.
